  • Bakersfield Police will host its 3rd Annual Motors Skills Competition on March 13 and 14 at the Park at Riverwalk (the event includes law enforcement rider competitions, vendors, food trucks, and a kids’ bicycle safety program with free helmet options).  Bakersfield Now
  • Wilson Park will see new improvements with one tennis court, two pickleball courts and concrete basketball courts—scheduled for completion by June 2026. Work will begin Monday, March 2 at the park on Hughes Lane and Wilson Road.  Bakersfield Now
  • CALM Zoo announced the passing of mule deer Radar and Odie on Saturday; Radar, nearly 18 and a public favorite who battled arthritis, and Odie, 17 and once shy until gaining trust, were honored for their long lives compared to wild averages.  Bakersfield Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Bakersfield College hosted a Black History Month Celebration Brunch on Friday, Feb. 27 at the Renegade Event Center on the Panorama Campus to honor African American alumni. The event featured guest speakers, awards, music and spoken word.  Bakersfield College
  • Independent filmmaker Rickey Bird debuts his documentary Kern Oil tonight at Fox Theater in Bakersfield, featuring over 50 interviews that reveal the story of local oil production. The film draws on personal loss from industry hardship and expects a red carpet turnout at 6 p.m.  23ABC News
  • Inside Nikki Beauty Supply & Salon at Ming Avenue Plaza, owner Fausta Adekoba (known as Nikki) has been braiding for over 30 years and celebrates African heritage during Black History Month. Her work weaves cultural identity into every style.  23ABC News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bakersfield police visited the area near Casa Loma Drive and South Martin Luther King Boulevard on Sunday to address concerns from residents about street vendors causing traffic, trespassing and trash issues. They said enforcement will continue and vendors are advised to contact Kern County Swap Meet for permits and licenses.  Bakersfield Now
  • California Water Service has begun upgrading water supply and fire protection by installing 2,200 feet of new mains plus three hydrants on Wall and Service streets, with work scheduled Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and expected to finish in April.  Bakersfield Now
  • Drivers in Bakersfield must plan for road closures starting Monday, March 2, as crews repair utilities along east Elcia Drive (closed for two weeks) while overnight work on March 4 will affect the Ming Avenue on-ramp, 99/58 connector, and eastbound Hwy 58 bridge.  Bakersfield Now

  • Clinica Sierra Vista will open a new 7,000 sqft clinic Monday along Brimhall Road to meet growing customer needs in west Bakersfield.  The Bakersfield Californian
  • Kern Medical's 10th Valley Fever Walk will be held at Park at River Walk on Saturday, March 7, featuring vendor booths, free face painting and educational stands, while its Valley Fever Institute relocates to a state-of-the-art facility on Stockdale Highway across from Cal State Bakersfield.  23ABC News
