COMMUNITY NEWS

  • CBCC has continued its 26-year tradition by delivering care packages and meals to 950 unhoused residents from locations including Bakersfield Rescue Mission, Open Door Network, Brundage Lane Navigation Center, and Dream Center (Kern County). The drive began early Friday, offering warm clothes to help them start the new year.  23ABC News
  • Friday morning, Git Patel of the Patel Foundation arranged food & care packages in a rented UHaul to help needy residents prepare for the new year. The foundation will distribute hundreds of boxes across the city in its ongoing effort to assist those in need.  The Bakersfield Californian

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • In 2025, Kern County saw big weather hits: March 6 funnel clouds in southwest Bakersfield, a Sept. 2 dust storm with winds over 60 mph, flash floods on Sept. 18 that canceled an event near Randsburg, record rains in November, and weeks of tule fog in the South Valley.  Bakersfield Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Caltrans has closed the Interstate 5 Tejon Pass rest areas after heavy rainfall caused flows to exceed projections, and crews are monitoring wastewater and removing sediment. The rest areas are expected to reopen after the upcoming storm.  Bakersfield Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • California has launched the CalRx program offering state-made insulin at low cost *cutting out high prices* for diabetics in Kern County. Local pharmacies will soon stock the medication at roughly $11 per pen so residents can get relief.  23ABC News
